Headphones For Robots: Hi, Jérome, you’re the man behind Last Rendez-Vous records. What’s the story behind this label?

Jérome: Last year, I released my first synthwave EP and I decided to self-produce it. At this moment I didn’t know if at least one person would like to purchase my music but I tried. I met some awesome people all over the world on the internet this last year, they made music, artwork, webzine, channel etc. They helped me to do something with my music and I have the idea to do something too with the synthwave artists who do good music but don’t like or don’t know how to broadcast it.

HFR: When did your passion for music begin? Could you tell us a bit about your influences?

J:   Child, my father listened to Jean-Michel Jarre, he took me to an open-air concert at Paris, it was my first approach with electronic music and synth vibes, it’s an awesome memory. In the 90s when I was a teenager, I loved metal bands like Metallica, Pantera, Sepultura, Slayer, etc I tried to play all my favorite songs on guitar for hours. In the 2000s some friends were fans of house music and I listened to artists from the French touch like Daft Punk but at that time I played bass guitar in a metal band and I did it for 8 years. In the 2010s I re-listened to electronic music with releases of Kavinsky, Sebastian, Gesaffelstein or Justice and I decided to make synthwave 3 years ago when I discovered artists like Carpenter Brut, Alex, Tonebox or Stilz. I also listen to different artists like Pink Floyd, The Doors, David Bowie, NIN, Bjork, Lana Del Rey, London Grammar and French variety like Gainsbourg, Polnareff, Katerine.

HFR: You have just released a french synthwave compilation. Where does the idea come from? What was the bribe to get 27 artists together?

J: I did some Spotify’s playlists last year. I started to look for good synthwave tracks and I realized there are more French artists than I thought, so I decided to make a French Synthwave playlist. With Last Rendez-Vous Records, I wanted to go further with this idea and bring together several artists. In the beginning, I thought about a digital release with 10 or 15 tracks because nobody knew the label. A lot of artists were excited by the project and proposed me unreleased tracks. The project has grown to finally 27 artists with 17 unreleased tracks. Some of them can’t be part of it but all are good persons with a real shared passion for music. It’s a pleasure to work with each of them.

HFR: What are the specific aspects of French Synthwave?

J: They all drink wine and eat bread when they play synthesizer… and I think there an rock approach.

HFR: Where do you think synthwave is going from now?

J: Maybe synthwave will mix with other genres, not only pure synthwave. It’s a rich genre that already includes metal, rock, but I also think it will evolve with other genres like hip-hop or others. The genre needs to be less cliché to grow up.

HFR: Can you tell us about your first and your last Rendez-vous?

J: the choice of the name “Last Rendez-vous” is about Jean-Michel Jarre’s album, it’s the first musical Rendez-Vous. The “Last” is an illusion, there is never a last Rendez-Vous

HFR: What would you like to see in a near future for your label? New artists and releases?

J: Of course I think about a second French Synthwave Compilation and maybe thematic releases that bring together several artists. I also hope to have the opportunity to work with French artist of course but also international artist. We will see.

HFR: Last words?

J:  I would like to thanks all the artists who were part of the compilation and all the listeners for their support and kind words. The synthwave is a community for passionate people I hope it will stay that way.
