To celebrate the release of the new album from 26Hate, we flew to Rio de Janeiro (virtually) to ask the darksynth producer a few questions.

Check out the interview.

Headphones For Robots: Who is 26Hate? Where do you come from? Where do you live?

26Hate: I was born in Belém do Pará, Brazil, but currently, live in Rio de Janeiro

HFR: How did you start making music? Could you tell us a bit about your influences?

26H: I started playing guitar when I was 10, Influenced by the bands Massacration and Iron Maiden, at 14 I joined a Heavy Metal band. Some years after, I started the band “Oceano do Caos”, on the vocals, but 3 years after I had some problems and I had to leave. I love deathcore, trance, melodic dubstep, hardcore beatdown, among many other musical styles.

In 2016 I started to produce Darksynth as “26Hate”, using as inspiration some of these genres.

HFR: What does 26Hate means to you?

26H: It’s a primitive instinct, fury, the frenetic reaction to chaos set up in a cyberpunk post-apocalyptic society, where the only thing that matters is to survive. 26 is my lucky number. It’s more or less the idea that has been coming up since I started producing.

HFR: How did you approach writing the songs for your last album, Overthrow?

26H: I was stuck on creation, so I had to watch a lot of movies, spent some time learning in tutorials, to improve the quality of the tracks, I’m happy with the final result. Some tracks had already been released, but I think they fitted perfectly.

HFR: How would you define synthwave today? and Darksynth? Are they modern genres of music?

26H: It’s hard to say, In my opinion, Synthwave is a mix of some elements from the 80’s and 90’s with the vision of a distant future, and darksynth explores the darker side of it and what the technology can reach. I like the idea that despite being “new” genres, they bring many references and rescue some feelings, or even create something like that.

HFR: Could you tell us a bit about your “go to” synths and drum machines? What are your favorite instruments?

26H: For creations, I use the software FL Studio and Novation Launchkey 61, several vsts, my favorites are Diva and Sylenth1. My computer is still weak but I intend to upgrade as soon as possible, currently, I am using the headphone akg k240 mkii for mixing and mastering.

HFR: Do you play your tracks live?

26H: Not yet, I intend to study more production and only after a good time, start working on the best form of live performance for me, I need to start using Ableton for this, some friends told me it’s the best software for that.

HFR: Last words?

26H: I would like to thank you for the invitation, thanks everyone who supports my work in some way

I’m excited about the future, still a bit lost in creating stuff, but I hope I can make something interesting, it’s always a challenge. I intend to improve the quality of my music in every way.
