We had the great chance to talk to the mighty Billy Mays Band from France about the release of Introspection, their new wonderful synth & guitars album.
Check out the interview!
Headphones For Robots: Who are the people behind the Billy Mays Band? Where do you come from? Where do you live?
Billy Mays Band: Hi! Thanks for your interest in my project.
I’m from Mulhouse, France and live in Selestat, a small town next to Strasbourg (East of France). Billy Mays Band is a solo-project born from the ashes of a dissolved band. I’m alone in this project, but really enjoy inviting other people to work with me on it, so they can become a member of BMB for one track or more. The true second member of BMB would be Dimitri Guindet, the guy I work on mixing and mastering with.
HFR: How did you start making music? Could you tell us a bit about your influences?
BMB: I started by playing the guitar in my bedroom fifteen years ago. I’m a huge fan of blues, hard rock, heavy metal and genres like those. Electronic music entered my life ten years ago when I discovered Justice’s masterpiece “Cross”. It really changed my approach to composing music.
HFR: You’re about to release Introspection on Lazerdiscs records. Is this your introspection?
BMB: Absolutely. “Introspection” is kind of a snapshot of my life, a transcription of personal feelings.
HFR: How did you approach writing the songs for your album?
BMB: I tried to write a story, more than an album. This album is a patchwork of pieces of tracks and riffs. Some of them are pretty old. The challenge was to put all of these ideas together and build a story with them.
HFR: What can you tell us about the cover of Introspection (made by Atomcyber)?
BMB: A very nice experience. I already worked with Atomcyber on my EP “Afterlife” in 2017. I called and asked him if he would like to work with me again, but with a different approach. I had a cover idea (big mountains, a human skull which will be a cave entrance, a road with a naked woman walking down). We worked together on this project – me on the songs, him on the cover. He had access to the work in progress of the album at any time, so he could draw while listening to the draft tracks. We are very proud of the end result. The cover is the glue of this album, making all the tracks floating in the same mood.
HFR: Could you tell us a bit about your “go-to” equipment? What do you use when writing a song and which are your favorite instruments? Do you prefer Software or Hardware ?
BMB: My computer with Ableton Live, some synthesizers and my guitars. I used to write sequences on other machines like Atari 1040 STF with an old version of Cubase, saving projects on floppy discs. Every instrument is a new source of inspiration. Physical contact with machines on other instruments gives me sensations, ideas, that’s why I prefer hardware.
HFR: Will you play your new album live? Do you have other projects?
BMB: Of course, I already played some of Introspection’s songs live, but not the whole album. I’m working on a new live set for 2020.
Other projects? Yes, I started to work on my next album.
HFR: As we love your sound and the way you produce music, what is the best advice that you could give to a younger music producer?
BMB: It’s important to be yourself when you produce something. Just have fun.
HFR: If Billy Mays was still alive, what would you tell him?
BMB: “Buy my CD, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity”
HFR: Last words?
BMB: Stop reproducing.
